Expectations

6 11 2010

Few weeks ago, I came across the TedxShanghai website and decided to contact them and tell them I want to help out in any ways. Dropped them and email and last Thursday, I was invited to their internal meeting and met a lot of awesome people over there! Met a cofounder of a really awesome web app which aims to measure the traffic of Singlang and Wei buo (China Version of Twitter). As the same age as me, they have already cofounded a company. Envious. And also a young couple who started their own coffee shop. I was asking them how to aim to return the fund they borrowed from their family, and they say they have no idea but they will just continue to work hard and earn a profit. You know it is very inspiring and admirable to see people who has already something ‘tangible’ especially when they are only at my age. Very very inspiring.

And it makes me reconsider a lot of things. Why am I studying so much. And also whether I am in the wrong field. In my previous post long time ago I was saying 男怕入错行.

Hmm but I guess a bachelor degree regardless of which field doesnt really matter. It’s only a ticket to any interviews.

And we were all introduced to a ted video clip which i highly recommend:

Its by Adora Svitak, a 12 year old child prodigy who gave an awesome speech on learning from kids and dreaming big. Love one of the quotes:

In order to make anything a reality you have to dream about it first

Last nite I attended the Distinguish Business Leader Series held by the Overseas Singaporean Unit and met a lot of awesome people as well. Was really a fulfilling night with great food and meeting a lot of bigshots Singaporean in Shanghai.

I have slowly shifted my heavy expectation away from my company to other aspects.

I was just telling a friend of mine that this is all part of growing up i guess.

Expectation is a funny thing. My friend gave me an analogy of expectation:

When we first came to Shanghai, we were expecting the rentals to be 5k per month, but because of expo and other factors, it was 7k and we found it very very expensive and kept complaining about it. But, if we were expecting the rent to be 10k per month but instead we have the current 7k rental, we would be damn happy about it and finding it quite cheap.

Very true. Expectation. Have to learn to manage it well.

Just some road side cheap stalls outside my school. Yeaps I know it’s random.

Haha, another way to put it:

Stop complaining! Learn from the mistake (or misfortune) and move on!
